Russian Piping Tip Experiment

image

I’ve been in a cake kick lately because March is my birthday-busy month. So every Feb~March I get into ‘imma gonna bake’ mode. I realized recently that I try so many crafts and try to get past certain point because I hate paying for product or service (well, pay, at all, I guess) if I can make or do it myself. The downside is that I end up making initial investments with equipment and stuff. BUUUUT that becomes a motivation because it turns into “well I have it, I’m not gonna waste it”. And hey, new skill for me. Those stick around in your muscles.

Anyho this experiment was for the Russian piping tips I got recently. I saw a bunch of video tutorials and they were so pretty and not that $ on Amazon I gave it a shot. I tried them with my fake buttercream but this time it was my first time to try it on an actual cupcake.

These base cupcakes were what I made for sugar reducing experiment. I went for ¾ of the recipe and it worked great. I will try again with 2/3 and see if it makes a huge difference. Why? Because I hate oversweet. Also I won’t feel (as) bad eating them. Also I have a little girl who will literally run around in circles for an hour or two (and get cranky tired) if I gave her too much sugar.

^The first one I thought 3 roses would be enough and decided it looked sad. So I added more around it. The two colors marbled pretty well.

Second one, you can see the one int the bottom didn’t detach well so its missing parts, haha.

Same thing happened on the third one, and also this one the whole thing wasn’t centered right so its kinda more on one side.

Started to get the hang of it… I also realized that if I really hate how the flower turned out, I can simply scrape it off and try again. It won’t work on all cakes but for something like this—can’t tell I tried a few times. BTW this was also my first ‘real’ try on the leaf tips too. Fake buttercream practice paid up, I didn’t have to mess up too bad at all. Yay practice! My tips for the tips (har har), don’t get a cheapo set like me. One I got has seams and the petal tips weren’t really petal tips. The standard round (I mean how wrong can you go) and stars were ok. Get a reliable brand like Ateco or Wilton, and get a few you like. These tips were the Tangchu ones and are nice and heavy duty.

This pipe was only one of the….5? flower tips I have, but I only had 6 cupcakes (nice practice batch since it only takes 1 egg) so I would have wasted way more buttercream. I will try the others next time.

Aaaaand take two for the husband and I, pack the rest to ask for coworker’s help to consume them all. Sorry for all the sugars, coworkers!
